[How] Double Faces in sketch Up 8

Postby bennymaeker » Mon Oct 01, 2012 7:14 pm

Hello. I have an wonderful 3d model of Lucy (RMS Lusitania). But in some places I need doublefaces. How I can convert a single-sited face to an double-sited face without using groups?

Which program used to convert skp to x file?

EDIT: i use Deep exploration and with that program ,when you import the skp file, you can choose if you want to create back faces in the same node or as separate node

Benny,

"Settings" button at the bottom right of the import (merge) tab, and then the last line of the menu obtained once you've clicked on that "settings" button.
These settings of the merge tab depend on the format of the model you import (or merge). For instance some settings regarding skp files will be different than the ones for 3ds, dxf, obj formats, and so on...
I've not the 5 version of DE, but I suppose it is about similar to the above.

But be careful with that option, your polygons number may very well "explode" and you may obtain as much as twice their necessary number. The more suitable but much longer method would be to either "double sides", either invert the faces you select yourself.

Another very useful tool regarding that very subject is the "Unify Normals" (next to the "Invert faces and/or normals" tools), under the Optimize tab.

i use DE 6.3 i don't know if the dialog boxes are the same but i try to explain you
(look attachment)

open the skp file you want. Hit the "settings" on the dialog box (first picture)
In this dialog box find "Create back face" and choose (2nd picture):
No (no back faces) or
in the same node (if the two faces have the same color or texture)
as separate node (if the two faces have a different color or textures)

but if you want to have back face in one o more objects, then go to the "Scene" of the dialog box (3rd pictures)
find the object you want highlight them click the right buttom of the mouse, select "Tools" and choose "Convert to Double-sided

....hope to hlep you

Benny, what Kostas and I have described is the options to import (merge function in DE) a skp file, not how to export an X one like on your screenshot.
If faces look inverted or invisible in your display window, then the export options for DirectX files will not solve the problem.
The process we've both Kostas and I described is to double sides all the faces of the skp model when importing it. That said, I repeat, for the reasons I've already mentionned, I DO NOT recommend to do that. Use the "Unify Normals" or/and the "Invert faces and/or normals" tools instead, (under the Optimize tab), for each concerned parts.

(This LUSITANIA model doesn't look very accurate by the way, but I've only seen that small shot of it so far, so I may be wrong).
