So... the picture speaks for itself I guess? Ok, my problem is that I don't know what method I should use to cut out these holes in the balks.

Strange... I'm using currently using Dropbox for file hosting... but it seems it's no good...

EDIT: I had to right-click the "Download" button and copy the shortcut/link to the image, and paste it here in my first post, and it works now :)

I don't know 3ds MAX well, but is there a boolean function?

Time to practice, then! :)
If it's anything like Rhino3D, you may have multiple options, where one is where you create a shape, intersect it with the other, use a boolean function, and that shape will be cut out of the one it intersects.

I suppose 3ds Max has TONS of ways to achieve what you want to create, even the most complex things ;)
