Question about sail position, rotation, angle, etc

Are you a boat builder? If you need help solving modelling/configuation issues related to boat building, this would be the place to raise them.

Question about sail position, rotation, angle, etc

Postby brackenclocks » Wed Jul 20, 2016 10:44 am

Ok so I started a new ship model last week, the US Brig Niagara. So far it's coming along quite well and is turning into one of my best models to date. I've been able to get the sails positioned correctly in my modeling program (3ds Max 2013). However, I'm having an issue with getting the sails to work correctly and not sure how to fix it, if possible.

Being that the masts on the Niagara are angled back so drastically, and trying to keep the model as accurate as possible, I cannot figure out how to get the sails to rotate properly on the model in Virtual Sailor. They seem to rotate along the X axis only, with no angle control to the other 2 axes. My other thought is making each sail an individual file, but I'm not sure if there are any sail limits and would rather ask before spending the extra time only to be disappointed. See attached pics showing what it looks like in 3ds Max, and what the result ends up being in VS.

Note: Unless there's a way to properly rotate the spinnaker sail, I plan on leaving it stationary.

Aloha,
Looking good.
In VS you can have a total of six sails. 3 Main and 3 Jib.
Each can have their own angle. See example below.
It looks like you would have the aft gaff sail as sailb3 and each group of sqare sails on each mast as sailb1 and sailb2.
Set your sails dead center XYZ in your modeling program, save .x files.

In the boat.cfg you would have something similar to this....

0.0 sails_x
37.5 sails_y
182 sails_z
0.584 sails_dy

1 has_sails2
0 sails2_x
37 sails2_y
157.6 sails2_z
0.585 sails2_dy
1 sails2_seperate

1 has_sails3
0 sails3_x
34.45 sails3_y
132.5 sails3_z
0.47 sails3_dy
1 sails3_seperate

0.0 sailb_x
43.45 sailb_y
86.0 sailb_z
0.025 sailb_dy

1 has_sailb2
1 sailb2_seperate
0 sailb2_x
42.45 sailb2_y
23.2 sailb2_z
0.035 sailb2_dy

1 has_sailb3
0 sailb3_x
36.92 sailb3_y
-41.08 sailb3_z
0.045 sailb3_dy
1 sailb3_seperate

The dy parameter is the angle of the rotation. Match that to the 'rake of the mast, or angle of the forestay's.
The sails separate alows you to angle each separately.
Haven't had enough coffee yet. So I hope this makes some sense and helps.

Ah, but there's always more.
There are sail parameters that I did not include. One I think is for the total arc/swing of the sail.
sails_dx = 0.0
sails_dy = 0.0
sails_dz = 0.0
sails_ux = 0.0
sails_uy = 0.0
sails_uz = 0.0
Any way good modeling, keep up the good work.

Although I do wish you were modeling for VSF.
There are so many improvements since VS. even the newest version of VS.

Keep us updated.
