Fires

I just thought of something, not a bad idea, but unsure. How about if the engines get overworked, the ship will catch on fire and if the engines sit turned off for a while, the fire smothers? This is just off the top of my head.
Were you in the boat when the boat tipped over?
No, silly. I was in the water!

It doesn't have to be a disaster playground. Stuff like that happens onboard ships and even the smaller boats too. The engines on those get overworked and explode.

I think it's a good idea, at least the part of having for example motor over heating if over worked. It's really no different than tipping over if you drive too fast and turn to hard. Perhaps it would encourage users to treat the ships more like they shoud be treated rather than just go full throttle all the time (and F4) just because they don't have the patience to sail along at true speed.

But how will the people in control of the ship know when the engines get overheated? Should there not be just a little bit of flames or something? How could we make that work?

Isn't it obvious??? Model a red light...large scale (you can even make it blink); add smokes with various shades, including red...and use xyz coords somewhere within the ship. I did that, and added massive crew_mass to create list and trim, and did a screenie and how-to in the old VS forum. Looked pretty realistic.

Hmm. I've been thinking about a way to make a fire for VS right now that won't burn itself out too quickly. The problem is, the ship has to keep running in order for the fire to keep blazing. I wonder how the colors change on the current fires from yellow at the very bottom to red at the tail end of the flames.
