Common Waypoints

I would be grateful for some advice here regarding waypoints.
I’m happy with the basic use of waypoints for a single boat including the looping of said WPs. The problem I have is with common or shared WPs. For example if I have a convoy of ships heading for the same point on the chart I’s rather have a single WP and task all boats to use this rather than each having it’s own set of WPs.
Looking at the manual it tells me I can have up to 64 WPs which can be shared between all vessels simply by selecting boat then WP but how? If I start with an empty scenario I cannot place any WP until I have a boat in the scene, once I do this the WP’s appear to be unique to that boat with another boat placed I’m unable to select any existing WP
