| NR-1 Undersea Research Submarine |
Author:
Michael
Hense |
The virtual version of the
NR-1 Undersea Research Submarine is based on the real
NR-1 which
is operated by the U.S. Navy, and is used primarily for
deep sea research and recovery.
"While I have endeavored to recreate all aspects of
the real thing, anyone familiar with the real NR-1
will find that there are a few small differences between
the real NR-1 and the Virtual Sailor© version, none
which will detract from the impression of actually taking
a high tech undersea research vessel to the depths of the
Virtual Sailor© environment."

| Trieste |
Author:
Mike Hense |
The Trieste, one of the pioneer deep
sea research submarines, was designed by Swiss physicist
Auguste Piccard.
Trieste became famous for taking Piccard's son, explorer
Jacques Piccard and Navy Lt. Don Walsh down on a journey
to the deepest spot on earth, the bottom of The Marianas
Ocean Trench.
The Trieste is more correctly termed as a bathyscaph, and
not a submarine.
It is designed to descend vertically, straight down with
a small capability for horizontal travel.
The Carolyn Chouest is one of four support
vessels, part of the Military Sealift Commands Special
Missions Ships Program, as was assigned as the primary
support vessel for the Trieste.
"Prepare
yourself for one of the most spectacular adventures of
exploration you have ever embarked upon in Virtual
Sailor.
The scenery contains many undersea canyons and deep
ridges to explore. There are also a few submerged wreck
sites to add to the deep sea adventure."

| Sea Shadow |
Author:
Chris
Johnston |
Built
by Lockheed in total secrecy inside the famous Hughes
Mining Barge, the Sea Shadow is the nautical equivalent
of the F-117 "stealth fighter".
The Sea Shadow is a SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin
Hull) vessel with all above-water surface sloped
radically inward.
She is 160 feet long, 70 feet in beam, 14 feet in draft,
displaces 560 tons and her diesel-electric propulsion
gives her a top speed of 13 knots.
She is invisible to shipboard radar, even at close range.
